Being Persistant With Your Community

Albert Einstein once said, "I know quite certainly that I myself have no special talent. Curiosity, obsession and dogged endurance, combined with self-criticism, have brought me my ideas." He's saying, basically, "It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer." He may have understated his intelligence and talent, but he does so to make a point. For more than any other reason, he was successful because he was persistent.

Community Guides
by Garthilk | Last updated Aug 20 2010 07:00 AM
By now you have noticed that a lot of my blog posts are about communities and some of the best practices that I have implemented over the years. The key to these articles is that for the most part you can use them on a day to day basis and then implement iterations and variations in your own organizations. The nice thing is that they are scalable, from your small fan sites, to your guild, to your massive MMO community. Yes, even at large scale, ethics and honesty and respect for others still holds true. ...

Warhammer 40k Imperium of Man Trailer
by Garthilk | Last updated Aug 22 2010 04:00 AM
Back at E3 THQ and Vigil announced their new MMO "Warhammer 40k: Dark Millennium Online". They stated that the game would revolve around a conflict dealing with the Tyranids as the main PVE enemy with 4 Factions. The Imperium of Man and The Eldar going up against the Space Orcs and the Chaos Space Marines. It comes as no surprise that the first playable race announced for this MMO is The Imperium of Man, but hey, at least we get some new game play footage right? So far the game looks great and I ...

Community Justice

Our nation often falls short of justice. I'm sure many people heard the story of a San Francisco taxi driver who used his car to stop a mugger, but was then forced to pay the mugger damages for his injuries. Or the rober whom upon breaking into someone elses home slipped and injured his back only to recieve unemployment and disability benefits due to his injury. There are many stories that illustrate just how often justice is skewed. Injustice violates our sense of fair play, just like when someone c...

How To Love Your Detractors

As a community leader there are going to be people looking to tear you down. It might be a fansite, it might be a peer, it might be a random poster, or it might be a blog. Whatever it is, it is easy to slip into the mode of thinking that this person is your enemy. Now I am quite sure that growing up everyone has heard this phrase, "If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." Few passages are more misunderstood than this one. Because the phrase is not about being weak o...

Guild Wars 2 Writes To GamesCon
by Garthilk | Last updated Aug 16 2010 02:00 PM
The amount of work that goes into a demo is pretty amazing. Typically a public demo of a product like Guild Wars 2 is the responsibility of a lot of people. This is marketing material and it has to look its best. So for that, ArenaNet updated their blog today with a few snippets from some of the developers whom helped bring the demo to life. Also if you're dying to see what is going on in the hours leading up to GamesCon, seems there's a few other updates as the developers land across the pond. T...

Kill Your Organization In One Easy Step
by Garthilk | Last updated Aug 08 2010 06:00 PM
I wanted to put together some information that I hope will improve the recognition of bad organizations. It's a bit of a warning. Something that all organizations and communities tread upon. This goes to guilds, fansites and especially profit driven cooperations. I'm specifically talking about ethical collapse. Tolstoy one wrote that all happy families are alike and that all unhappy families are unhappy in their own ways. The opposite appears to be true when it comes to organizations and communit...
