38 Studios
Jan 05, 2009 - 6:24 PM - by Ogor
With the relaunch, I wanted to talk about the games that we're going to be covering from here on out. Today, I want to talk about why we're covering 38 Studios. If you're not familiar with the name, I have the feeling that many people are going to be looking a bit closer at them in the coming year. Currently they are working in pre-production on an unnamed MMO project currently called Copernicus.

38 Studios was founded in 2006 by Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and since then, the company has grown and hired a lot of well known folks to help guide their business efforts. Their goal has been to assemble a team of talented individuals and to bring to life an epic new intellectual property.

On board are notables, such as comic book creator Todd McFarlane, fantasy author R A Salvatore, ex-SOE members Ryan Shwayder and Steve Danuser and several other established business executives that will try and guide this company out of the startup mode and into actual development mode.

Since 2006 the company has been strengthening it's management credentials with several high profile acquisitions, hiring and some headline making. For the average gamers this means that they're adding more folks closer to the top of the company, so that it looks good when they go looking for additional funding, which they have been doing. Rumors say that the company is currently seeking another 10 million in funding to continue their hiring and development process.

This money is a drop in the bucket compared to their total projected development budget that is expected to swell to more than 60 million dollars as the game is projected to launch.

Ultimately the next year and a half is going to make or break this startup. Either they're going to be the next Planet Hollywood and just be a bunch of famous people that don't have the business sense to actually build a restaurant, or 38 Studios is going to launch a brand new IP that will surely entertain and amaze.

Personally, I'm hoping for the latter. So that is all about 38 Studios, it's why we're covering them and it's why we're going to provide you all the news and information we can.

The leaks worth leaking.
Jan 05, 2009 - 10:34 AM - by Ogor
One of the biggest things we're going to be working to control is the quality of leaks. Users simply putting up 100 word comprehensive reviews of a game, game systems or mechanics, is not what I would call a quality leak. First, it doesn't at all truly help anyone. Those type of rantish leaks do not help anyone else in their quest for more information. Finally, in many cases the opinion of the poster so overwhelms the post that the quality invariably suffers.

So with that, any news that we headline in the future is going to bring the facts. In other words, we're going to do our best to filter out the gross overstated opinions and provide you the information you desire. Let you decide whether it is cool or not.

And that brings is to part of the foundation of this site. Big networks rely upon developers spending advertising dollars with them in order to make money. So of course they're not going to step on the toes of developers, they're not going to tell you exactly how things work, or what to expect. They're just going to hype the product no matter what.

Betaleaks.com is going to be about bringing a healthy dose of doubt to the news. We're going to provide the news, the leaks, the information, we're going to put it under the microscope and we're going to let you decide if it is worthy.

We're more than just leaked news.
Jan 04, 2009 - 11:14 PM - by Ogor
One of the biggest changes anyone whom has visited this site will find, is that we're going to be more than just leaked information about games in beta. I think this site has become famous for the cool screenshots, videos and other information we digg up. But after those were seen and the cool information consumed we noticed people really weren't sticking around.

We realized that a lot of folks were leaving to find more conprehensive information about upcoming games. To that end, we're going to begin covering the news and information with several upcoming games and even news about studios whom may or may not produce some cool upcoming games.

In addition we're going to refine the leak process. If you've got cool screenshots, or video, or guides to upcoming games, we're going to be working with the authors and link finders to make sure their efforts are recognized.

In other words, you're going to be able to get better coverage on the games you find the most interesting. I hope you all enjoy it.

Help! What happened to the site?
Jan 03, 2009 - 9:19 PM - by Ogor
I know several folks may be going into seizures at this point in time. Many of you may be wondering where the site went. Well if you've been reading the site, you would have known we've had some changes in store. The new site before you is one of the really big changes that is coming down the pipe. But in cause you're new, or didn't read the old news postings. Here is what is going on with the site.
  • There is a fresh new look for the site. New front end, upgraded back end.
  • This requires everyone wanting to be a member of the site to register again.
  • Your old leaks are gone and we're working to bring you new ones.
  • The forums and site registration is currently closed while we roll things out.
  • The registration will be closed for the next two to three weeks.
  • During the next few weeks we're going to roll out all the cool details.
So in a nutshell, that is what is going on. That's exactly what you can expect. Also, we're going to be soliciting your feedback on how to make this place an even better place.

BetaLeaks.com 2009
Jan 03, 2009 - 8:09 PM - by Ogor
I would personally like to welcome you to the alpha version of the new Betaleaks.com website. As you may or may not know, this site has grown from just a simple message board, to a portal covering several games and providing thousands of people a unique look at the MMO scene. 2009 is going to make a big change in the day to day handling of news, information, interviews and articles and today marks the first phase of those changes.

The first part is going to be a new theme. Something that is going to be easier to use. Easier to navigation and something that will provide users an at a glance view of the latest and greatest in news and information.

With that said, I'm going to keep this very brief for right now. Over the next few days I'm going you walk you, step by step, the changes, the reasons behind those changes and all the cool things you are going to be able to look forward to. I hope you enjoy all the cool new things we have in store.
